Here's a detailed look at how to calculate and understand the ROI for such a conversion:

Derive the Benefits of Lower Operating Costs:

Operating costs of electric vehicles (EVs) are generally lower than those of fossil fuel-powered vehicles for several reasons. Firstly, EVs have fewer moving parts, which translates to reduced maintenance costs, as there are no oil changes, fewer brake replacements due to regenerative braking, and less wear on components like the exhaust system. Additionally, electricity is usually cheaper than gasoline or diesel, meaning the cost per mile to charge an EV is significantly lower than refueling a conventional vehicle. EVs also benefit from government incentives, such as tax rebates, which can further reduce the overall cost of ownership. With the added advantage of lower maintenance and fuel costs, EVs offer a more cost-effective long-term ownership experience compared to traditional vehicles.

Fuel Consumption:

  • Electric Vehicles (EVs): The cost of electricity to charge an EV is significantly lower than the cost of LPG or fossil fuels. For example, an EV consumes approximately Rs. 0.3 per kilometer. This is based on the assumption that an EV consumes 6 units of electricity to cover a range of 80 kilometers, and the cost of one unit of electricity is Rs. 4.5. So, the running cost per kilometer for an EV stands at Rs. 0.3.
  • CNG Powered Vehicles: CNG vehicles typically cost around Rs. 2.3 per kilometer, based on an average mileage of 35 kilometers per kilogram of LPG. This is considerably higher than the cost of running an EV, making LPG a less economical option.
  • LPG-Powered Vehicles: LPG vehicles typically cost around Rs. 2.7 per kilometer, based on an average mileage of 23 kilometers per kilogram of LPG. This is considerably higher than the cost of running an EV, making LPG a less economical option.
  • Fossil Fuel (Petrol/Diesel) Vehicles: The running cost for conventional petrol or diesel vehicles is generally around Rs. 4 per kilometer, based on an average mileage of 25 to 30 kilometers per liter of fuel. This is the most expensive option when compared to both EVs and LPG vehicles.

Maintenance Cost:

  • In addition to fuel savings, EVs also offer significant reductions in maintenance costs. EVs have fewer moving parts compared to internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles (whether running on LPG, petrol, or diesel). This leads to lower wear and tear, and consequently, reduced maintenance needs. Key maintenance tasks like oil changes, exhaust repairs, or complex engine repairs are not needed for EVs. EV's are almost maintenance free whereas it costs typically between Rs.2000 - 5000 per month for other vehicles.
  • On the other hand, LPG and fossil fuel-based vehicles require more frequent maintenance, including engine servicing, oil changes, and exhaust system repairs. Additionally, the cost of replacement parts for an ICE vehicle can be higher, especially as the vehicle ages.
  • EVs thus stand out as the most cost-effective option for running and maintaining a vehicle, especially when compared to LPG or fossil fuel-based vehicles. The lower cost of electricity, combined with reduced maintenance requirements, makes EVs a more affordable choice for daily use in the long term. While LPG and fossil fuel prices can fluctuate, the cost of electricity remains relatively stable, further adding to the economic advantage of EVs.

Government Incentives:

  • Various countries and regions offer incentives for converting diesel vehicles to electric, such as tax credits, grants, and rebates. These can significantly reduce the upfront conversion cost.
  • For example, in the U.S., certain programs may offer up to $7,500 or more in incentives for electric vehicle conversions, which could lower the ROI timeline.

Battery Life and Replacement::

  • The battery life in converted vehicles is usually around 8 to 10 years, after which the battery might need replacement, which could cost $5,000 to $15,000 depending on the vehicle.
  • However, battery technology is advancing, and the cost of new batteries is falling, so future replacements may become less expensive.

Residual Value of the Vehicle:

  • A converted vehicle may have a higher resale value than a diesel vehicle in the long run due to increasing demand for eco-friendly transportation.
  • EVs tend to hold their value better in markets with green regulations.
